DESCRIPTION:
The AGENDA project, alongside coordinator ACI EUROPE, is currently a consortium of seven European airports: Cologne Bonn and Stuttgart airports (Germany), Graz and Vienna airports (Austria), SEA Milan airports (Linate and Malpensa for Italy), the aviation company EVIA AERO and Kosice Airport (Slovakia). With a duration of 39 months, the project will receive €25 million in funding against €82 million in investments.
AGENDA aims to electrify airport operations and install hydrogen supply infrastructure at these seven European airports, which handle a total of approximately 88 million passengers per year. Through EC funding, it hopes to accelerate progress towards the goals of the European Green Deal and Climate Neutrality by 2050 – enabling these airports to become trailblazers and standard-setters for Europe’s airport community. By electrifying ground operations and infrastructure, the project paves the way for the future electrification of electric-powered aircraft across Europe.
The project’s scope includes the installation of Electric Ground Power Units (eGPU), Pre-Conditioned Air (PCA) systems, 400 Hz equipment, and charging points for ground service vehicles, as well as the upgrade of grid connections. Additionally, the project incorporates synergistic elements, such as photovoltaic panels and battery storage systems, to supply renewable electricity to the installations at Stuttgart, Vienna, and Milan airports.
SEA MILAN AIRPORTS MAIN ROLE:
Electrification of Airport Ground Operations.
As part of the European project, SEA is leading a major initiative aimed at making ground operations at Milan Linate and Milan Malpensa airports more sustainable.
The project includes the deployment of new infrastructure at Malpensa Airport that will allow aircraft parked at the gate to use ground-based electrical power and dedicated air conditioning systems. This will significantly reduce the use of Auxiliary Power Units (APUs), one of the main sources of emissions while aircraft are on the ground.
At the same time, SEA will install electric vehicle charging infrastructure at both Linate and Malpensa airports, as well as a hydrogen refuelling station at Malpensa for airport operational vehicles. These investments will support the gradual transition towards low-emission ground mobility.
The project also includes the installation of a photovoltaic plant at Malpensa to generate renewable energy, helping to improve the airports' energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of daily operations.
Through these actions, SEA reaffirms its commitment to innovation and the decarbonisation of air transport, promoting increasingly efficient, sustainable and environmentally responsible airports.
